SALT LAKE CITY — Junior center Jeremy Olsen has been placed on a medical scholarship as a result of an injury keeping him from competitive play, according to Utah Athletics.

Head coach Larry Krystkowiak said Olsen will continue to have a role with the team, but the exact role has not been determined at this time.

“It’s difficult to have my career cut short due to injury, but playing basketball for Utah has been on of the most amazing times of my life,” Olsen said in a prepared statement. “I have had so many great experiences with my teammates that I will cherish. Being a part of the progress this program has made has been so rewarding.”

Olsen played limited minutes his junior season, with freshman center Jakob Poeltl and Dallin Bachynski getting most the minutes for the Utes. Olsen played in 24 games and averaged 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds last season. Olsen’s best season with Utah was his sophomore season, where he averaged 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds.

“Jeremy has been such a loyal and committed basketball player and he is also an incredible student, teammate and person,” Krystkowiak said in a prepared statement. “He came to this decision about a month ago and it is unfortunate that injuries will keep him from competing in his senior season. He will always be a big part of our program’s revival.”

Olsen was part of the Pac-12 All-Star team that traveled to China last summer. He was a three-time first-team Academic All-Pac-12 selection. Olsen will graduate this summer with a degree in accounting.

With Olsen no longer available, Utah was able to sign 6-foot-4 guard Lorenzo Bonam from Inkster, Michigan. Bonam played two years at Gillette College in Wyoming, where he averaged 16.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists this last season.

“Lorenzo provides another threat in our backcourt and will compete for time at both guard spots,” Krystkowiak said in a statement. “We are excited to have him on campus as a part of the Ute family.”

Utah has had success recently with junior college transfers, with Delon Wright showcasing his talent in his two years with Utah after playing at the College of San Francisco.
