SALT LAKE CITY — Utah senior guard Delon Wright was named the nation’s top point guard Friday.

Wright was awarded the 2015 Bob Cousy Award at a presentation Friday night hosted by the College of the Holy Cross. Wright is the first player from the Pac-12 to receive the award since its inception in 2004.

The senior guard beat out fellow Pac-12 guard T.J. McConnell of Arizona, Tyus Jones of Duke, Fred VanFleet of Wichita State, and West Coast Conference Player of the Year Kevin Pangos of Gonzaga.

Wright finished with 1,022 points, 397 rebounds, 352 assists, 155 steals and 77 blocks in his two years at the University of Utah. He averaged 14.5 points, 5.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals in his senior season. Wright was a major contributor in Utah’s return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. Utah made it to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005.

Wright was named to several All-American teams at the end of his senior season, including the John R. Wooden All-American Team, and the Associated Press, USBWA and the NABC Second Team All-American Team.

He leaves Utah third all-time in steals and the 35th all-time leading scorer. Wright finished in the top 10 in several statistical categories at Utah, including 10th in career assists (352), second in season steals (82), eighth in season assists (178) and tied for ninth in season blocked shots (43).

Wright is the 12th player to be awarded the Bob Cousy Award. The last two winners of the award were Connecticut’s Shabazz Napier (2014) and Michigan’s Trey Burke (2013). Saint Joseph’s Jameer Nelson was the first player to receive the award.
