STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — The first time fifth-year senior Rollins Stallworth catches a pass this season, he'll double his career output. He'll be making his first career start when No. 21 Stanford opens the season at Northwestern on Saturday.
Stallworth gets the nod over returning redshirt junior receiver Michael Rector, who was suspended for a week by coach David Shaw for disciplinary reasons. Rector was reinstated on Aug. 25.
"He's finally getting the opportunity and is really taking advantage," said senior quarterback Kevin Hogan, who threw for 2,792 yards and 19 touchdowns a year ago. "To me the great thing is he catches everything and runs good routes."
Senior Devon Cajuste, who set a single-season school record averaging 22.9 yards a reception as a junior, will split time with Francis Owuso at the other receiving spot. Cajuste has been practicing with the team for a week since returning from an injury.
Hogan, beginning his third full year as starter, said he's worked with Stallworth as much as any other receiver.
"We're together from winter until camp, throwing at least three times a week and sometimes four," Hogan said. "We've got our timing down. I'm feeling comfortable with all of them. I'd love to have Devon out there."
Stallworth has appeared in 16 games with the Cardinal, and has one reception for 10 yards. That hasn't been his only contribution though.
"He was great in the running game," Hogan said. "He set a standard for blocking."
Hogan will have most of the same offensive players back, with notable exceptions in receiver Ty Montgomery and left tackle Andreas Peat.
"The first game week is exciting because we had put camp behind us," Hogan said. "Right now all we've done is play against our own defense. Now we get to play a new one."
