MADRID (AP) — Spain will most likely hold general elections on Dec. 20, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Thursday.
In an interview on Cope radio, Rajoy said another date was possible.
But when a journalist later asked him if the headline would be "most likely on Dec. 20", Rajoy agreed saying, "Well, use the headline, the one you said: It's most likely that on Dec. 20 there will be general elections in Spain."
He said the date would be announced once Parliament approves the budget for 2016 in coming weeks.
Opinion polls suggest that Rajoy's conservative Popular Party may win most seats in the elections but lose the majority it secured in 2011.
The government hopes the surging growth of the economy will help it stem the ruling party's dip in popularity.
