DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Teachers, artists and others are gathering in Durham to celebrate the 20th anniversary of an arts-based education program.

They'll meet Monday through Wednesday to mark the longevity and success of the A+ Schools Program, which uses the arts to help teach other subjects including math, science and geography.

The Kenan Institute for the Arts founded the program in 1995 and it has grown into a network of 50 North Carolina schools. It also has expanded to Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The North Carolina Arts Council manages the program. Arts Council Director Wayne Martin says the program shows that the arts are crucial to education.
