AKRON, Ohio (AP) — University of Akron's president says the school isn't going to change its name.
A name change was one of the ideas floated as officials discussed recently how to further differentiate the university from other institutions.
But university president Scott Scarborough sent an email to the campus community Monday afternoon saying the name will remain the same. He said misinformation fueled rumors about the name-change idea, leading to petitions and other opposition from people who don't like it.
In the Monday email Scarborough wrote that it was time to "put an end to rumors and speculation about a name change that serve only to misinform and divide."
The school has been called the University of Akron since 1913.
