WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A group of Purdue University students is urging school officials to establish a rape crisis center on campus so that victims can get help sooner, especially after hours.
But university officials say services for sexual assault victims already exist either on campus or in Greater Lafayette and that a new facility wouldn't be a good use of resources.
Purdue University Student Health Center medical director Dr. Sarah Sayger tells the Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1JTyCZv ) her facility receives about 10 to 12 sexual assault cases per year.
The health center has four clinicians who can conduct sexual assault examinations, but they are limited to business hours. Cases outside those hours are referred elsewhere.
Doctoral student Michelle Campbell says more services need to be available on campus.
