NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's Schools chancellor says the arts can teach children valuable skills and to develop a work ethic.
Chancellor Carmen Farina made her comments Wednesday to a group of arts education at the Face to Face 2014 conference.
According to the Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/1eMDg1j ), she said the arts processes of revising, editing, rehearsing and performing can help students learn analytical skills.
She said she believes every middle school should have a theater program. She says drama can transport children from "where you are to what you can be."
But a report this month by the city comptroller has found that 20 percent of city public schools lack any arts teachers including one out of seven middle and high schools.
