NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — Norwalk schools officials are stepping up their efforts to promote diversity, seeking to hire kindergarten-to-12th grade teachers who are black, Hispanic, Asian or of other minority groups.
The Hour of Norwalk reports (http://bit.ly/1KvcrN2 ) that of 882 certified teachers, nearly 86 percent are white. Black and Hispanic teachers account for about 6 percent each of the workforce.
Minority students represent a majority of Norwalk's student population of 11,091 students, with 39 percent Hispanic and 19 percent black as of last October. About 35 percent are white.
Robert Dylewski, director of labor relations at Norwalk Public Schools, says the goal is to move toward a teacher population that mirrors Norwalk's student population.
The district is stepping up minority recruitment, visiting job fairs and colleges to find qualified minority candidates.
