MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Critics are blasting legislators after the state's budget committee passed a surprise motion that would allow private, home-schooled and online voucher school students to participate in public school sports and activities.
The Legislature's Joint Finance Committee passed a motion early Wednesday morning that included the plan. The plan was never addressed in the meeting.
Opponents say they weren't consulted about the bill and had previously told lawmakers that they didn't support it.
The motion's authors couldn't immediately say which lawmaker suggested adding the proposal to a larger section of the budget.
Rep. Bob Kulp, a Stratford Republican, discussed a similar measure earlier this year. He didn't respond to a request for comment Friday.
The measure is not final. The budget is subject to approval in both chambers.
