HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut lawmakers are considering legislation requiring private tax-exempt colleges to pay local taxes on residential property they own.
The bill passed the House last week. It would apply to certain properties used for student housing.
Under the legislation, taxable commercial property purchased by a private tax-exempt hospital would also continue to be subject to local property taxes.
House Speaker Brendan Sharkey of Hamden, whose district includes Quinnipiac University, pushed for the legislation. He said these private colleges and hospitals "put a strain on municipal services such as police, fire and public works."
But, he adds, the host community has to pick up the tab in the form of higher property taxes.
In March, Quinnipiac made a voluntary tax payment to Hamden for $1.23 million.
The bill awaits Senate action.
