THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Construction on a Career Magnet Center has been moving smoothly despite recent weather delays, Lafourche Parish officials said.

Ground-breaking for the new school on Louisiana Highway 308 was held in January.

In recent weeks, work has been proceeding on pilings and foundations.

The Daily Comet reported (http://bit.ly/1m7Vtpx) the $15.9 million project is expected to be completed by July 2015.

The center is designed to bridge education with the area's economy by allowing junior and senior high school students to earn industry-based certificates.

Students also will receive field-related internships and work with industry mentors while attending high school. They will be able to earn high school and college credits simultaneously.

The 62,000-square-foot center will include two buildings, one mostly for shop areas and the other for labs.

The center plans to offer classes in agriculture, allied health science, automotive, construction technology, cosmetology, cooking, marine operations, process technology and welding.

Students planning to attend four-year colleges will have an opportunity to take advanced courses in calculus, English, chemistry and physics.
