TOKYO (AP) — The design of the official emblem for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has come under scrutiny for bearing a striking resemblance to an existing logo

A Belgium-based designer has taken to social media to express surprise over the similarity between the Tokyo 2020 logo and one he designed for a theater in Liege, eastern Belgium.

The Tokyo emblem, unveiled last week, is based on a "T," standing for Tokyo, tomorrow and team. It was designed by Japanese artist Kenjiro Sato.

The logo for Theatre de Liege has a similar shape in white against a black background.

Belgian designer Olivier Debie posted on Facebook a photo of the two works side by side, expressing his amazement when he saw them.

Japanese organizers apologized to the IOC on Wednesday over the scrapping of the original design for the Olympic stadium amid public criticism over cost.
