Another Aaron leads the Braves
UNDATED (AP) — Aaron Harang has pitched for five major league teams since 2011, but he appears to have found a home in Atlanta.
The 35-year-old Harang is now 3-1 with a National League-leading 0.70 ERA after throwing seven no-hit innings in the Braves' 6-0 shutout of the Mets in New York.
Harang hurt his chances for a complete-game no-hitter by walking six, raising his pitch count to 121 before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth. The no-hitter remained intact until David Wright singled with two outs in the eighth off reliever Luis Avilan (AV'-ee-ahn).
Harang was signed by the Braves late last month, and only after the team learned they would spend the season without starters Brandon Beachy and Kris Medlen.
Freddie Freeman belted a two-run homer in a four-run eighth that broke open the game.
Looking at the rest of the major league slate:
— Carlos Gomez hit a solo homer and collected two RBIs as Milwaukee downed Pittsburgh 5-3 to improve to a major league-best 12-5. Scooter Gennett laced a two-run double to back Kyle Lohse (lohsh), who's 3-1 after allowing one earned run over 6 1/3 innings.
— Washington scored twice on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to beat St. Louis 3-1. Ian Desmond scored the tiebreaking run on the wild pitch, and the insurance tally came home on catcher Yadier Molina's (YAH'-dee-ehr moh-LEE'-nahz) throwing error on the play.
— Alfredo Simon took a shutout into the seventh inning and allowed just an unearned run and four hits over six-plus innings to pitch Cincinnati to its third straight win, 4-1 over the Cubs in Chicago. The Reds went ahead on Billy Hamilton's RBI double in the fifth, one inning before second baseman Emilio Bonifacio (boh-nih-FAH'-see-oh) threw wildly while trying to complete an inning-ending double play, allowing two runs to score.
— Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and five RBIs as the Rockies throttled Philadelphia 12-1 in Colorado. Tyler Chatwood allowed an unearned run on two hits over seven innings for his first victory in two starts this season.
— Tyson Ross held San Francisco to four hits and struck out nine in eight scoreless innings of the Padres' 2-1 win over the Giants in San Diego. Pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal smacked a solo homer in the eighth to make it 2-0 before Brandon Belt went deep with one out in the ninth.
— Giancarlo Stanton leads the majors with 26 RBIs after launching a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to push Miami past Seattle 8-4. Stanton was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
— Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EH'-nehs SEHS'-peh-dehs) and Alberto Callaspo each hit one of Oakland's four homers and drove in three runs apiece as the Athletics ripped Houston 11-3. Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick also went deep for the A's, who were never threatened after scoring seven runs in the first inning off Jarred Cosart.
— Aaron Hill hit a two-run single in the 12th inning and Miguel Montero homered, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 5-14, the worst record in the majors.
— Tampa Bay spotted the New York Yankees a 4-0 lead before James Loney drove in four runs and Wil Myers collected three RBIs to lead the Rays to an 11-5 rout in the Bronx. Loney put the Rays ahead with a two-run single in the seventh, one inning before Sean Rodriguez belted a two-run homer.
— Baltimore doubled up Boston 8-4 as Jonathan Schoop (skohp) went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. The Orioles tagged Red Sox starter John Lackey for six earned runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
— Martin Perez pitched a three-hitter in his first career shutout, one of the Rangers' many highlights in a 12-0 laugher against the Chicago White Sox. Leonys Martin (lee-OH'-nees mahr-TEEN') homered and was one of four Texas batters with three hits.
— Albert Pujols hit his 497th home run and Howie Kendrick added a pair of two-run blasts as the Los Angeles Angels clobbered the Tigers 11-6 in Detroit. Pujols crushed a three-run shot in the Angels' 10th straight win over the Tigers, the longest active streak in the majors by one team over another.
— Kansas City was a 5-0 winner over Minnesota behind Jason Vargas, who allowed seven hits in seven innings and lowered his ERA to 1.24. Mike Moustakas cracked a two-run homer, Alcides Escobar (al-SEE'-dehs EHS'-koh-bahr) had three hits and Omar Infante also drove in two runs for the Royals.
— Munenori Kawasaki and Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kahr-nah-see-OHN') hit RBI singles in the seventh as Toronto downed Cleveland 3-2. Melky Cabrera was 4-for-5 with a run scored to help the Blue Jays overcome Carlos Santana's two-run homer in the sixth.
MLB-PLAYER MOVES
Mets deal Davis to Bucs...A's Doolittle gets new deal
UNDATED (AP) — The New York Mets have traded slumping first baseman Ike Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league pitcher Zack Thornton and a player to be named. The 27-year-old Davis was hitting .208 with one home run and five RBIs in 12 games in a platoon with Lucas Duda and Josh Satin at first base. Davis hit 32 homers for the Mets in 2012 but fell off sharply last year.
Also in the majors:
— The Arizona Diamondbacks have reinstated outfielder Cody Ross from the disabled list and designated left-handed reliever Ryan Rowland-Smith for assignment. Ross hasn't played since sustaining a dislocated hip while running to first base against the New York Mets last Aug. 11.
— Reds closer Aroldis Chapman has been cleared to throw batting practice for the first time since he was hit in the face by a line drive during an exhibition game on March 19. Chapman sustained fractures of his nose and a bone above his left eye when hit by the drive off the bat of Kansas City's Salvador Perez.
— Texas Rangers right-hander Tanner Scheppers has been put on the disabled list because of elbow inflammation. Scheppers says he's had discomfort in his pitching elbow since the end of last season, when he led the team with 76 appearances in his second year in the bullpen. Scheppers made four starts after joining the rotation this spring, going 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA.
— Oakland Athletics reliever Sean Doolittle has received a five-year contract containing a pair of club options that could extend the agreement through the 2020 season. The 27-year-old left-hander is 7-6 with a 3.10 ERA and four saves in 122 career relief appearances, allowing 100 hits with 129 strikeouts in 125 innings.
— The Detroit Tigers have recalled right-hander Justin Miller from Triple-A Toledo and optioned outfielder Tyler Collins to Toledo.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Wings grab home-ice advantage from B's...Habs in control
UNDATED (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings barely earned the NHL's final Eastern Conference playoff berth, but they now have the upper hand against the top-seeded Boston Bruins.
Pavel Datsyuk (DAHT'-sook) scored with 3:01 remaining to snap a scoreless tie and give the Wings a 1-0 victory in Boston. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots for his third career playoff shutout and the first by an NHL netminder in this postseason.
Boston finished with 15 more wins and 24 more points than the Red Wings this season, but Detroit took three of four from the B's during the regular season.
The Bruins will try to knot the series Sunday afternoon.
Also in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Frederik Andersen stopped 34 shots and Anaheim grabbed a 2-0 series lead by downing Dallas 3-2. Captain Ryan Getzlaf (GETS'-laf) collected a goal and an assist after taking a slapshot to the head in the closing minutes of Wednesday's win over the Stars.
Andrew Cogliano's short-handed goal was the game-winner for the Ducks, who head to Dallas for Game 3 on Monday.
Montreal is up 2-0 in its first-round series after Rene Bourque tallied twice in the Canadiens' 4-1 verdict over the Lightning at Tampa Bay. P.K. Subban (SOO'-ban) set up second-period goals by David Desharnais (day-ahr-NAY') and Bourque, but the outcome remained in doubt until Brandan Gallagher and Bourque scored 2:53 apart to put the Canadiens ahead 4-0 with 5:21 remaining.
Carey Price stopped 26 shots for the Habs, who host Game 3 on Sunday.
NHL-FLYERS
Flyers may get goalie back for next game
NEW YORK (AP) — The Philadelphia Flyers might have No. 1 goalie Steve Mason back for Game 2 against the Rangers. Mason missed Thursday's 4-1 loss to New York because of an undisclosed upper-body injury. He was hurt last Saturday against Pittsburgh, when he was knocked over and hit the back of his head on the ice. Mason and the Flyers have declined to say whether he has a concussion.
NBA-GRIZZLIES/CALATHES
Calathes suspended for violating drug policy
UNDATED (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies will be missing a key part of their rotation when they open their NBA playoff schedule on Saturday at Oklahoma City.
A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that point guard Nick Calathes (kah-LAY'-thehs) has been suspended for 20 games for violating the NBA's drug policy. The 25-year-old rookie averaged 4.9 points and 2.9 assists in 71 games this season.
Yahoo Sports was the first to report the suspension.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-DUKE
Duke loses another player
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The Duke men's basketball team is losing another player as sophomore Rodney Hood is entering the NBA draft. Hood averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists after sitting out last year following his transfer from Mississippi State. He joins freshman Jabari Parker, who declared for the draft Thursday.
NBA-SILVER
Commissioner weighs in on "one and done"
NEW YORK (AP) — NBA commissioner Adam Silver told reporters that he's in favor of raising the draft age limit. Silver is moving cautiously on potential changes to areas such as the lottery format and playoff structure, but makes it clear that raising the draft age limit to abolish the so-called "one and done" is one of his priorities.
Regarding the sale of the Milwaukee Bucks, Silver says owners aren't ready to vote on the potential sale of the team yet.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-TULSA
New coach at Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tulsa has hired Frank Haith as its men's basketball coach after he went 76-28 in three years at Missouri. The 48-year old Haith replaces Danny Manning, who left for Wake Forest after two seasons in Tulsa.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-GEORGIA STATE
New deal for the coach
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia State basketball coach Ron Hunter has been given a pay raise as part of his two-year contract extension through the 2020 season. Georgia State finished 25-9 this season. The Panthers lost in the Sun Belt Conference tournament title game and played in the NIT. The Panthers have had two 20-win seasons in Hunter's first three years. He was the Sun Belt coach of the year this season.
PGA-RBC HERITAGE
Second round in progress
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) — K.J. Choi is the overnight leader in the rain-delayed second round of the RBC Heritage tournament. Choi shot a 4-under-67 in the round to stand 5-under for the tournament, two shots in front of Scott Langley, Luke Donald and Billy Hurley III. Play was halted with 65 golfers left on the course, including Robert Allenby who trails Choi by one shot through five holes.
LPGA-LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP
KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) — Angela Stanford shot a 5-under 67 to open a four-stroke lead over Hyo Joo Kim and Michelle Wie (wee) after three rounds of the LPGA LOTTE Championship in Hawaii.
Stanford is 13 under going into the final round Saturday.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
A new guy is in front
DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez (AHN'-hehl hee-MEHN'-ehz) has made a splash in his debut on the Champions Tour with a bogey-free 7-under 65 in the opening round of the Greater Gwinnett Championship. The affable Spaniard started on the back nine and was 6-under at the turn, with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
Jimenez has a three-shot lead over defending champ Bernhard Langer, Kenny Perry and Steve Pate.
TENNIS-FED CUP
Czech Republic leads Italy 1-0 in Fed Cup semis
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) — The Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead over defending champion Italy in the Fed Cup semifinals Saturday after Lucie Safarova defeated Sara Errani (ehr-RAH'-nee) 6-4, 6-1 in the opening singles match.
The 26th-ranked Safarova converted her first match point with a return winner to complete the victory over her 11th-ranked opponent.
Sixth-ranked Petra Kvitova plays Saturday's second singles for the host against the 54th-ranked Camila Giorgi.
