Wainwright stymies error-prone Nats...Triple play at the Trop
UNDATED (AP) — Adam Wainwright authored a gem as the St. Louis right-hander stymied Washington on just two hits in the Cardinals' 8-0 rout of the Nationals. Wainwright allowed a pair of singles -- Ian Desmond's infield hit in the second and Adam LaRoche's single in the ninth. He struck out eight. It's his 17th career complete game and seventh shutout. He's 3-1 this season. Wainwright also chipped in at the plate with a double and single.
Matt Adams drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who were aided by four Washington errors. Desmond, Washington's shortstop, made a pair of errors, raising his season total to seven. The Nationals have 20 errors through 16 games.
In other major league play:
— On a cold day in Minneapolis, the Twins got eight scoreless innings from winning pitcher Kyle Gibson in a 7-0 win. Gibson gave up four singles, struck out four and walked one to improve to 3-0. Game-time temperature was 31 degrees, the coldest for an outdoor game in Twins history. The game was the opener of a day-night double header. The Twins won the nightcap 9-5. Minnesota scored three straight runs on wild pitches by the Toronto Blue Jays' Sergio Santos in the eighth inning. Blue Jays pitchers walked eight Twins in that inning.
— The New York Yankees trounced Tampa Bay 10-2 and turned in the first triple play of the season. CC Sabathia pitched seven innings to improve to 2-7 in 12 career starts at Tropicana Field. Brian Roberts, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Yangervis Solarte drove in two runs each for the Yankees. Sean Rodriguez of the Rays bounced into his second triple play of his career, a 5-4-3 in the second inning.
— Pittsburgh handed Milwaukee its first road loss, 11-2. Andrew McCutchen hit his first homer of the season and drove in three runs. Pedro Alvarez had a three-run shot and pinch-hitter Josh Harrison broke a tie with a homer in the seventh.
— James Shields struck out 12 in eight innings and the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros, 5-1.
— Jon Lester pitched eight sharp innings and David Ross hit a tiebreaking RBI double in Boston's two-run ninth in the Red Sox' 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Lester allowed one run and seven hits for his second straight win after opening the season with two losses.
— Hyun-Jin Ryu (hee-YUHN'-jihn YOO) stretched his road scoreless streak to 26 innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to avoid a sweep. Ryu struck out three and walked one on a season-high 112 pitches in seven innings and improved his mark to 3-1.
— Ben Revere's RBI single in the eighth gave Philadelphia a 1-0 win over Atlanta. Braves starter Alex Wood went the distance giving up eight hits and striking out seven to take the loss.
— Ian Kinsler homered and drove in four runs to help Detroit beat Cleveland 7-5. The Indians Lonnie Chisenhall had four hits to raise his average to .522.
— Mitch Moreland drove in three runs in the Rangers' 8-6 win over Seattle. Kevin Kouzmanoff had two doubles to up his batting average to .414 since joining Texas on April 9. Robinson Cano (kuh-NOH') hit a three-run homer in the Mariners' six-run third inning.
— Franklin Morales allowed four hits in six innings and Wilin Rosario hit a tiebreaking groundout in a three-run seventh in the Colorado Rockies' 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres.
MLB-MOVES
Cards' Kelly on DL
WASHINGTON (AP) — St. Louis right-hander Joe Kelly has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
Kelly got hurt while trying to beat out a bunt attempt in the fourth inning of the Cardinals' 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. He is 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in three starts this season.
In other baseball news:
— Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) could be back in the New York Yankees' lineup Sunday in their finale against Tampa Bay. The first baseman walked twice, struck out and scored a run Thursday in his first extended spring training game since injuring his right leg.
— Nationals manager Matt Williams says right-hander Doug Fister threw two innings at extended spring training in Florida and could join the Nats in about three weeks "assuming all goes well." Fister is on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 23 with a strained back muscle.
NHL-PLAYOFFS
Blues and Avs work overtime...Sharks and Rangers win easily
UNDATED (AP) — The NHL playoffs have been going for two nights, and already there have been three overtime games. Two of those thrillers were last night.
In the longest game in St. Louis Blues history, Alexander Steen scored at 26 seconds of the third overtime to give the Blues a 4-3 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
Ryan Miller blanked the Blackhawks after Patrick Kane scored on a breakaway to put Chicago up 3-2 late in the first period.
Both teams face a short turnaround with Game 2 Saturday afternoon.
In other first-round series openers:
— Paul Stastny (STAHS'-nee) was the hero for the Colorado Avalanche in their 5-4 win over upset-minded Minnesota. Stastny forced overtime with a goal with 13.4 seconds left in regulation and he ended it with a goal 7:27 into overtime. It's the Avs' first playoff victory since 2010.
— Brad Richards and Derek Stepan scored power-play goals 47 seconds apart in the third period and the New York Rangers beat Philadelphia 4-1 in their NHL playoff opener. The Rangers have beaten the Flyers nine straight times at Madison Square Garden. They held Philadelphia to one shot on goal in the final period.
— San Jose built a five-goal lead after two periods and doubled up the L.A. Kings 6-3. Joe Thornton, Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau got the Sharks off to a fast start with first-period goals.

Duke and Kentucky lose freshmen to the NBA draft...UCLA keeps a player
UNDATED (AP) — Duke's Jabari (juh-BAR'-ee) Parker is hoping to become Duke's latest one-and-done star to become the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-8 All-American forward said Thursday he'll enter the NBA draft after being the highest-scoring freshman in Duke history. He was also the first freshman to lead the Blue Devils in scoring and rebounding, and the first freshman in three decades to be selected team MVP.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky guard James Young has announced that he will enter the NBA draft, becoming the first of the Wildcats' heralded freshmen to turn pro. The 6-foot-6 Young led Kentucky with 82 3-pointers last season. He was one of six high school All-American recruits on the Wildcats.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The UCLA basketball team and its fans got some good news when Jordan Adams announced he will return for his junior season and won't enter the NBA draft. Adams led the Bruins in scoring with 17.4 points per game, was the second-leading rebounder with 5.3 per game, and set the school single-season steals record with 95. He was named first team All-Pac-12.

Jax receiver "out of control" in Indy
UNDATED (AP) — Indianapolis police have arrested Jacksonville wide receiver Tandon Doss on a disorderly conduct charge, but he will not be prosecuted.
A police report says the 24-year-old Doss was "out of control" and arrested during a disturbance with another man Wednesday afternoon. The report provided no additional details on the incident.
Adams said the Marion County Prosecutor's Office declined to file charges

— Jacksonville has released veteran linebacker Russell Allen after he failed his physical. Allen started 29 games the past two seasons, but missed the final two games last year with a concussion.
— Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb was released from an Arizona jail after serving a one-day sentence for a DUI arrest late last December. Records released by West Mesa Justice Court show the 37-year-old McNabb served his time Wednesday and was released Thursday.
— Former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper has lost his bid to be released on bail in a sexual assault case after an Arizona judge decided there's enough evidence to move forward with charges against him.
CFL-JOHNSON
Ohco, Canada!
MONTREAL (AP) — Former NFL receiver Chad Johnson is heading to the Canadian Football League. The 36-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Montreal Alouettes. The former Pro Bowler last appeared in an NFL game during the 2011 season with New England. Johnson, who once changed his last name to Ochocinco (oh-choh-SINK'-oh), is 30th on the NFL's all-time receiving list with 11,059 yards.
NBA PLAYOFFS
Dark until Saturday
UNDATED (AP) — The NBA is taking a couple days off to prepare for its second season. The playoffs start Saturday with four games: Brooklyn at Toronto, Golden State at the L.A. Clippers, Atlanta at Indiana and Memphis at Oklahoma City.
On Sunday, there are four games as well: Dallas at San Antonio, Charlotte at two-time NBA champion Miami, Washington visits Chicago and Portland is at Houston.
PGA-RBC HERITAGE
Three in the lead
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) — Matt Kuchar (KOO'-chur), Scott Langley and William McGirt share the lead after the first round of the RBC Heritage tournament after posting 5-under-66's. They enjoy a one-shot lead over Harris English. Masters' co-runner-up Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) is among a group that shot 69 and trail by three shots.
LPGA-LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP
Stanford takes lead
KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) — Angela Stanford shot an 8-under 64 on a wind-swept course to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the LPGA LOTTE Championship.
Stanford took the lead early with five birdies in a row on the front nine and finished the day with eight birdies.
METRODOME
Minneapolis stadium demolished
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Metrodome is no more.
Project leaders for the new Minnesota Vikings stadium say the demolition of the team's old home has been completed ahead of schedule. The new facility, costing nearly $1 billion, is scheduled to open in 2016. About 80 percent of materials from the torn-down stadium will be recycled, including 80,000 tons of concrete.
