PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island professor has joined a team of scientists from four European countries to study how plant reproduction has evolved.

Rhode Island Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1S23j1I ) Brown University biology professor Mark Johnson is the only American scientist in the group, which plans to study plant reproductive processes in light of climate change and a growing population.

Johnson says the goal is to focus on seed crops such as corn, rice and wheat and better understand what genes and proteins are involved in the seed-making process.

He says the group plans to publish their findings so that agricultural companies can take advantage of the results.

Each participating country is contributing money for the $2.9 million research project, which is being led by a Portuguese research institute.
