BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The University of Mary in Bismarck will be dividing a more than $500,000 grant into several scholarships for low-income students interested in wildlife conservation or environmental science.

The grant from the National Science Foundation will assist 12 students who will receive the scholarships for four consecutive years provided they meet and maintain certain academic standards. School officials say recruiting Native American students will be a priority.

The scholarships will range between $8,000 and $10,000 per year. The first scholarships will be awarded to five students this fall.

The students who receive scholarships will be matched with a faculty member and a peer mentor and will attend monthly seminars with wildlife conservation and environmental science professionals to explore career options and network with others.
