(Salt Lake City-AP) -- More motorists can avoid the annual ritual of safety and emissions inspections, but they'll have to pay more when trhey do get an inspection.

Safety inspections will be required for 1996 and newer model vehicles only every other year. That's a change in state law that took effect today.

The safety inspection fee, however, will go up to 15 dollars from nine dollars for passenger cars.

Four-wheel drive safety inspections will jump to 20 dollars from 12 dollars, while motorcycle tests go to seven dollars from five dollars.

Also today the Genetic Privacy and Discrimination act took effect. It bars companies and health insurers from making hiring or promotion decisions based on someone's D-N-A, or requiring employees to get the tests.

Representative Paul Ray of Clinton says Utah is one of the last states to pass a D-N-A privacy act.
