(KSL News) -- The discovery of a mysterious substance forced the evacuation of a West Jordan Deseret Industries store this afternoon at 7800 S. Redwood Rd.

An employee apparently opened a bag of donated merchandise and found the powder, which was taken to the trash compactor to be disposed of. The trash compactor ended up spreading the substance through the air.

Soon after over a dozen employees and shoppers started complaining of symptoms.

Olivia Allen, Shopper: "I had actually gone back into that area to take my son to the bathroom and when I came out I was feeling really light-headed and my throat is like congested. I can't swallow very well."

Reed Scharmin, West Jordan Fire Dept.: "The crews are going through everything that's here. They'll attempt to determine what was around the people at the time and from that maybe they can identify the substance."

Officials shut the store down for today. It will reopen on Monday.

They say the substance was probably just a household product, like detergent.
