(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Assistant coach Kerry Rupp will take over the Utes basketball team while head coach Rick Majerus is being treated for heart problems.

Rupp has been the Utes' assistant for three years. He coached one game last season when Majerus left to attend a former player's stepfather's funeral.

The 49-year old played basketball for Southern Utah and graduated in 1977. Before that, he coached high school for 24 years and was named Coach of the Year by the Utah High School Activities Association.

Rupp coached the Utah All-Stars in 1995 and worked with the Utah Jazz and Seattle Supersonics summer leagues in 1993 and 1996. He was also the director of the Karl Malone Basketball Camp.

Majerus is being hospitalized and announced this will be his last season.
