(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Republican Governor Olene Walker says her running mate will be current Lieutenant Governor Gayle McKeachnie.

Walker made the announcement this afternoon from the Governor's Office at the East Capitol Building. She hailed McKeachnie's understanding of the constitution, along with his understanding of water, energy and public land issues.

McKeachnie says it was his decision to run with Governor Walker in her bid for re-election. McKeachnie had first said he was a short timer, but said he was seriously considering sticking around after Governor Walker declared her candidacy for the 2004 election in March.

Governor Walker named McKeachnie as her lieutenant governor after taking over as the first female governor of Utah in November.
