A neighborhood bands together as a man, wanted by police, runs through their neighborhood, trying to break into homes and cars.
It all started when police pulled over the suspect's car on a routine traffic stop. As they were searching him, the man jumped back in his car and took off with a Murray police officer partially inside.
He ended up dumping the car, and running through several neighborhoods. Last night at 10:00, we heard from neighbors near where he was caught. But before that, the man ran through another Murray street.
Just like the ones we heard from last night, these neighbors really took control of the situation.
Police were looking for 25-year-old William Winn. The neighbors did all they could to help locate him.
Like many of her neighbors, Jane Rice saw the cops on her street and heard the sirens. But soon she heard another sound.
Jane Rice/ Suspect Tried to Steal Her Car: "I went in the house not knowing what was going on. I was in there shredding paper and I heard a pop and I knew it was a gunshot."
A retired officer who lived down the street had found the suspect, William Winn, hiding in his neighbor's garage and shot at his foot. He missed, and that's when the suspect ran to Rice's house.
Debbie Lynne Crane/ Saw Suspect & Called 911: "We shut the dorrs and made sure everything was safe. Then I looked out and I saw a gentleman in my neighbor's car, and I knew it wasnt' him."
Crane called 911 as she watched out her window. The suspect was in a red and white truck. The keys happened to be in the ignition, but the battery was dead.
"He jumped out and jumped in the other car to see if it was open."
Jane Rice: "He got into my Durango. I could see that he went through everything looking for my keys."
But he had no luck there, either. So he jumped the fence into the Crane's yard and eventually hopped a wall to Arrowhead Lane, where he was caught with a taser gun.
But it turns out, Winn had left behind a knife in the Rice's truck.
"It looked like a folding knife. But it was this long when the blade was out. I was just in shock to see it. No, that's not mine."
The cops picked up the knife, but what could be the handle still sits in the truck. Today the Rice's are thankful they have such attentive and wonderful neighbors.
"You know, he didn't have a chance, if he stayed on this street anyway."
This really was a pretty amazing neighborhood. They told us most residents have lived there for a long time and they all look out for each other.
Winn was booked into jail on burglary, aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance.
