Sam Penrod ReportingThe weather here isn't causing any delays, but the weather in Denver and the Midwest is forcing flights out of Salt Lake City to be cancelled and leaving many travelers wondering if they will make it in time for Christmas.
Canceled. That is what the departure sign reads at Salt Lake International Airport, for all flights scheduled to Denver.
The Denver Airport won't reopen to air traffic until tomorrow afternoon, at the earliest.
Sophie Ellison, Trying to Get to Denver: "This is actually the second time that I've rescheduled today, and now I can't leave ‘til Saturday, but at least they got me out sometime."
Unlike Denver, where there are no hotel rooms left, stranded passengers in Salt Lake at least don't have to wait it out at the airport.
Those who have tickets to fly United and Frontier airlines are particularly out of luck.
Elizabeth Young, Traveler: "Elizabeth Young, Traveler: "All the flights are cancelled to Denver. Just trying to find another way home."
But even renting a car and driving to Denver or through Colorado is not much of an option either. Heavy snow, especially through mountain passes has had long stretches of the interstates shut down in Colorado, because snow plows can't keep up with it.
In Utah, an estimated 670- thousand people are expected to travel more than 50-miles away from home in the next week. Most of them will travel on the road. Ninety-thousand Utahns will travel by air, and in most cases their flights are close to being on-schedule today.
Ron Lisiecki, Salt Lake resident: "Only about twenty minutes...It's not too bad."
And if you plan to travel by air, remember the rules here at the airport, especially with carry on liquids and wrapped presents.
But no matter how you plan to travel, the weather is going to be a factor, so it's best to plan ahead and be prepared for delays.
