FILLMORE -- A Millard County high school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student has made his first appearance in court.
Keith Lorraine Gillins, 61, appeared in 4th District Court on Wednesday, where he was formally charged with two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old, a third-degree felony.
Court records show that Gillins hired his own attorney and was ordered by the judge to have no contact with the alleged victim.
Gillins posted bail and was released from jail. He is due back in court on July 8 for a hearing to determine whether he will have a preliminary hearing.
Gillins is a former mayor of Fillmore and LDS bishop. He was arrested after the female student came forward with the allegations. Charging documents say the crime occurred in November 2008, but authorities said they are looking at other alleged encounters.
