This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

I'm a salesman. Although my business cards for my last two jobs did not have "salesman" listed, that's exactly what I did. The late Red Motley, publisher of Parade magazine, once said, "Nothing happens until somebody sells something." That is so true!

I recently had a most interesting visit with Tom Metcalf, president of TeleNotes in Sandy. Tom tells me that about eight years ago both he and his brother, Jim, were salesmen who found themselves frustrated at the time-consuming task of data entry that is inherent with any sales job. They both thought it would be convenient to have a full-time secretary to remove the administrative burden so they could concentrate on selling. The result: TeleNotes, a virtual contact management system created by sales reps for sales reps.

TeleNotes works with individual sales representatives as well as large corporations to maximize database management and overall sales rep productivity. After each sales call, a representative simply dictates the details of the call, including any follow-up activities, directly into their cell phone. The information is transcribed and posted to the Internet by the following morning for the sales rep to retrieve. Information is entered into the computer through a stay-at-home workforce similar to the structure used by other large corporations, such as JetBlue.

Tom tells me the response to TeleNotes has been phenomenal. Salespeople love the product and report increases of up to 40 percent in their sales time. TeleNotes is used by sales teams across the country and is even branching into Canada via large corporations such as John Deere and ICU medical. The company's latest innovation is a mobile version of the contact system accessible from the user's Blackberry, iPhone or any other Web-enabled device.

Tom says his original goal was to create a product that would allow sales reps to have more time to carry out what they do best: selling. And TeleNotes has done just that.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
