WEST VALLEY CITY -- Hale Center Theatre is getting ready for the opening night of "Treasure Island," and the big scene stealer isn't an actor or actress. It's the set.
Somehow, designer Kasey Udy and his crew figured out how to build a pirate ship inside Hale Center Theatre.
"Designing it was pure fun," Udy said. "I think we all have images of what pirates and Treasure Island should be, and we didn't want to disappoint."
Garrick Dean and Skler Holman are the two leads in the play. Before they got into character, we asked what they thought of this set.
"When I first saw them plan this out, I thought, ‘I can't believe they can do this stuff!'" Holman said.
"You have to be a great actor so people focus on you and not the other cool things that happen when you're on stage," Dean told us.
"It allows me to get into my character," Holman added. "I can really feel like I'm on a ship, or island."
They can't do it without getting wet. There's a 12-foot deep pool around half the stage. The pool is 12,000 gallons of water, about 50 tons of water. That's a lot of weight," Udy said.
There's also giant staircase that is lowered and lifted on the set for different scenes and a 20-foot tall mast. The crew only has one week to put it all together!
The show opens this Monday and runs through the beginning of June. Just to warn you: if you're in the front rows, you will get wet. It's the splash zone!
