This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

I just love stories about business owners who overcome adversity to create a successful business! Such is the case with Burgess Colemere. From the ashes of his first business endeavor, he created a real estate firm that is still going strong almost 60 years later.

Burgess owned a furniture store with two locations, one in Salt Lake City and the other in Vernal. After the Salt Lake City location burned down in the early 1950s, he found himself in dire circumstances and started doing everything in his power to rid himself of the debt from his business that insurance didn't cover. He discovered real estate and decided to open Colemere Realty and Construction Company in partnership with his wife, Enid, in 1953.

Burgess' son, Tom, started working as a "gopher" in his father's office as a young boy. After getting his education, Tom worked with his father full time until 1972, when he took over the business. Today, Tom's wife, Carol, and his two sons, Scott and Bryan, have joined him in the business, bringing Colemere Realty Associates, as it is now called, into its third generation of family ownership.

Tom says Colemere Realty Associates has come a long way from his father's original emphasis on land development and housing construction. Holladay-based Colemere is a full-service real estate company that offers services for residential, investment and commercial real estate. The company provides some property management, but its main focus is real estate.

Colemere Realty Associates is distinguished by its personalized service as well as the agents' depth of experience. To renew their licenses, most real estate agents are required to have 12 hours of continuing education credit in a two-year period, but agents at Colemere have three times that, and they are Certified Residential Specialists too. Despite the conditions of the current real estate market, Tom is confident Colemere Realty Associates is in a good position to weather the storm.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
