ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A former police officer who showed his old badge for leniency at traffic stops has been charged with trying to impersonate an officer.
Utah Highway Patrol officers say Maxwell Tyler Houghton pulled out the badge twice at different stops by troopers on the same day. Shortly after the second time they learned he was a former officer who left the St. George Police Department nearly two years ago.
Troopers caught up with Houghton and arrested him.
UHP Sgt. Dan Ferguson says it's illegal for anyone who isn't a police officer to possess a badge.
Houghton, 27, was jailed Monday on $1,331 bail on charges of speeding and two counts of impersonating a police officer.
Online jail records at Purgatory Correctional Facility show he was released Friday.
