BERYL, Iron County — A southern Utah wildfire has grown to more than 2,000 acres in a little more than a day after it sparked Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze, dubbed the "Sawmill Fire," is burning near the towns of Beryl and Lund in Iron County. The fire prompted the evacuation of several cabins in the area.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, it's expanded to an estimated 2,086 acres, according to the state fire managers' website, Utah Fire Info.
"Dozers are actively working to establish a continuous containment line around the fire perimeter. Hand crews and engines are working the fire's edge to secure lines and mop up hot spots," the agency said in an update on Wednesday.
Crews are battling the fire from the air and on the ground; additional resources are also being deployed.
"Out of an abundance of caution, the Iron County Sheriff's Office is evacuating roughly half a dozen cabins and yurts located 2-4 miles from the fire," officials said.
If the fire expands and threatens permanent homes, the sheriff's office said it would deploy a reverse-911 alert to registered residents.
Utah Fire Info determined the fire was caused by lightning.
