SALT LAKE CITY — One person has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a party in Salt Lake City on Sunday night.

Jose Guadalupe Reyes, 47, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, shooting a gun and causing serious injury, three additional counts of discharge of a firearm and being a restricted person in possession of a gun.

Sunday, Reyes was hosting a party near 1050 South and 1500 West when "two people showed up that started to cause issues," a police booking affidavit states. The duo allegedly causing the issues was kicked out, according to police.

They later returned, however, with additional people.

"At this time, a physical fight broke out between the two groups. During the fight, multiple shots were fired. One individual who had been kicked out was hit one time by a bullet on the left side of their chest," police wrote in the affidavit. The 20-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Salt Lake police stated. He later told police he was running away from Reyes' residence when he was shot in the back, according to the affidavit.

When questioned, Reyes claimed "other people involved in the fight fired at them first and they were just defending themselves," the affidavit states. He also allegedly told investigators that he "only fired ... in the air to scare off the other group."

Detectives rounded up surveillance video, however, and "in the video it looks as if the person firing the firearm is ... shooting toward other people in the street," according to the affidavit. "In the video, you can hear the firearm being fired and see the muzzle flash. You do not hear other shots prior."

Police farther down the street found additional casings that were different than the ones found near Reyes' residence.

Reyes acknowledged that he is "not allowed to own firearms" because he is "not a legal citizen," according to the affidavit.
