HERRIMAN — A West Jordan woman who allegedly asked if she could see a friend's phone is accused of using it to steal thousands of dollars earmarked for the PTA at a middle school in Herriman.
Brielle Fincher Smith, 37, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with theft and unlawful computer access, second-degree felonies.
Herriman police responded to a report on Sept. 5 that "someone fraudulently transferred $18,000 out of a Mountain America business account … for the PTA for Fort Herriman Middle School," according to charging documents.
Investigators learned the manager of that account was "hanging out with friends when he decided to show the bank account on his phone to his friends. Brielle Fincher Smith asked to see it, and he gave her his phone. When he checked his banking app the next day, he saw that $18,000 was missing from his business account to an external account belonging to Brielle F. Smith," the charges state.
After obtaining bank records for the account and reviewing transaction history, police confirmed the money was transferred to Smith's account without authorization, court documents state.
