SANDY — A 31-year-old mother is under arrest after allegedly driving drunk with her children in the car and crashing into a mailbox before fleeing the scene.
Kerri Lynn Housley was arrested Monday for investigation of several counts of driving under the influence and child endangerment.
Police say she hit a mailbox Monday about 6 p.m. at 11675 S. Eagle Bend Road and left the scene, only to return moments later with her car's bumper dragging.
What made the situation even more alarming was what officers discovered when they caught up with her.
According to Sandy Police Sgt. Greg Moffitt, Housley was intoxicated and had her three young children in the back seat. A field sobriety test revealed her blood alcohol level to be .291 — nearly six times the legal limit of .05 in Utah, according to a police booking affidavit.
"We heard kind of what sounded like a crash," said Rebecca Doyle, a neighbor who was home with her children at the time. "But I heard metal scraping."
According to the affidavit, Housley lives just a few doors down from Doyle and was on her way to a parent-teacher conference when the incident occurred.
Officers also found a bottle of whiskey inside the vehicle, the affidavit states.
Doyle expressed relief that no one was hurt, especially her children, who had considered playing outside earlier that day.
"I'm honestly grateful that it wasn't our kids out here," Doyle said. "I had the thought earlier in the day, we're going to play with scooters in the front. I'm just glad we stayed inside."
