BENJAMIN, Utah County — Utahns are rallying around a family who experienced "the unimaginable" this weekend after a mother died unexpectedly just a week after delivering twins.
In the two days since 22-year-old Morgan Hughes died, more than $240,000 have been donated to her husband and children. Posts about the family have been shared dozens of times by people across multiple social media platforms since her death.
Hughes died Saturday from postpartum complications with her heart, brother-in-law Brigham Hughes said on the social media platform X.
She gave birth to twins Hudson and Georgia on Dec. 19, both of whom are in the neonatal intensive care unit as they were born six weeks early.
"Morgan was a bright, strong woman. She will be sorely missed. My brother, Sam, is one of the most dependable men I know. I love him dearly. The twins, Hudson and Georgia, won't know their mom. They are adorable," Brigham Hughes said.
The Hughes are from Benjamin, Utah County, and were married in April 2023.
"All of their lives just got exponentially harder and more complex. If you have a moment, please pray for him," Brigham Hughes' post continues. It has had 9 million views in less than 48 hours.
"She was just the best — just as good as you can imagine. Everything you hope one of your children will find in a spouse," Morgan's father-in-law, Brian Hughes, told KSL-TV.
The family says their faith in Christ is helping them get through this loss.
Sarah Thorne, a cousin of the Hugheses, created a fundraiser* for the family who she wrote have "gone through the unimaginable."
"She had just graduated hair school, while pregnant, and was starting her career. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife and friend. She has a beautiful smile and was so excited to be a mom. We know she will be with her babies in spirit as they continue on in life with their father and all their families," Thorne said in the fundraiser.
Morgan Hughes' father, Brian Hodson, is a captain for Lone Peak Fire Department. The agency shared a post about the family Sunday, saying Morgan was a "cherished member" of the fire department's family for over 17 years.
"Morgan was a kind and loving soul whose greatest joy was becoming a mother. She brought light, warmth and joy into the lives of everyone who knew her, and her loss is immeasurable," the department said.
"Now, Sam faces the unimaginable challenge of raising their newborn twins without Morgan by his side. The road ahead will be filled with emotional and financial hardships as he navigates this profound loss and ensures Georgia and Hudson have all they need to thrive."
