THE MEADOW — What's the most unique human/animal connection you've ever heard of? Perhaps your cousin had a pet shrew, or you once knew a biology teacher who befriended frogs.
My grandma had a pet antelope when she was a young girl living on a ranch in Arizona. Her family also had a pet bobcat, which turned out to be a bad combination with the antelope. But the most unique human/animal friendship I ever saw was my neighbor, Gordon, who had a pet tarantula. You might think that sounds ordinary enough. After all, you can buy tarantulas at a pet store.
Gordon's tarantula, however, was a wild spider that crawled into his yard from the nearby foothills. And Gordon somehow trained it so whenever he whistled, the spider would obediently climb onto his shoulder.
True story.
The partnership in this video isn't as exotic as a fully trained tarantula or as random as a shrew. But it's definitely adorable.
Since I haven't spent much time around cows, I've never thought of them as a calm species. But this little girl and her calf look like they're more relaxed and happy than any shrew or spider could ever be.
So the next time my kids ask for a pet, I'm gonna recommend we get a bovine.
