SALT LAKE CITY — A 12-year-old girl who was critically injured in a crash last week in Salt Lake City has died, police said.

On Sept. 24, a small SUV smashed into the back of a line of five cars at a stoplight on 1700 South near the 300 West intersection, police said. A passenger in one of the vehicles was critically injured in the "chain-reaction crash" and taken to the hospital.

Police announced Thursday they learned about the girl's death earlier this week and "needed to take the appropriate steps to confirm the information." Police did not identify the girl.
