SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Tuesday with trying to kill his roommate for calling police on him the night before.

Ryan Cory Elkington, 39, is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and retaliation against a witness, a third-degree felony.

On Aug. 29, a man called police on his roommate, Elkington, regarding a domestic violence incident. The next night, the man was asleep in his room when Elkington's girlfriend barged in and started arguing with him about calling the police, according to charging documents.

Elkington then entered the room and started choking the roommate, according to the charges.

"(Elkington's) actions in this matter are egregious and concerning. (He) repeatedly strangled the victim to unconsciousness. In a video of the incident, (Elkington) can be seen holding the victim in a chokehold while the victim is limp and not fighting back," the charges allege. "During the incident, (Elkington) made statements that he would kill the victim and asked the victim if he wanted to die."

Police say a security camera in the bedroom recorded the confrontation.

"Elkington can be heard saying, 'I will kill you,' and, 'You wanna die?'" the charges say. "Elkington admitted to strangling (the man) during the incident and stated that he would have ... 'killed the guy.'"

Elkington's girlfriend is listed as a co-defendant in court documents but had not formally been charged as of Tuesday.
