SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah defensive end Van Fillinger is back on the field after battling a foot injury that limited him last season. As the Utes prepare for the upcoming football season, Fillinger is ready to make an impact.
Reflecting on his recovery, Fillinger said "I finally feel healthy. I feel the best I've ever felt."
The road back wasn't easy, but his determination and commitment to the team fueled his rehabilitation, he said.
"Mentally, I knew what I had to do but couldn't do it. Now going through that, I feel very grateful about where I am now," Fillinger said.
The senior defensive end is focused on staying in the moment as he works through fall camp.
"I come with a good mindset every day, trying to get better," he said. "I want to stay in the moment and not get too ahead of myself right now."
Fillinger's positive outlook extends to his future with the team, as well. "I hope for the best," he said with a smile. "I am getting better in practice and working out, so I'm really excited to see how far I can go."
As Fillinger continues to build on his progress, he'll help anchor a defense known for its toughness and resilience. His return adds depth and experience to a team with high hopes for the season. But Fillinger's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and a strong mindset.
With his newfound health and focus, Fillinger is poised to make his mark and contribute to the Utes' success this year. As he puts it, "I'm just grateful to be back and ready to see what we can accomplish together."
