New fire in southern Utah impacts traffic on I-15 Sunday

CEDAR CITY — Interstate 15 was closed for a time Sunday in southern Utah, due to the start of a new fire.

The Tank Fire started Sunday afternoon in Iron County near Enoch, according to Utah Fire Info.. As of Monday morning, the fire had burned roughly 25 acres. The fire originally threatened structures. However, crews were able to stop it from moving forward.

Utah Fire Info also reported the fire was caused by a vehicle.

"They've got the road completely closed down on both sides of the freeway there and using aircraft to put the fire out," Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy Battenfield said.

The UHP said the fire impacted both I-15 and Old Highway 91, which were closed for about an hour on Sunday.

Both roads reopened by 8:30 p.m.

Other fires

The eastbound lanes of state Route 92 in Utah County were also closed Sunday evening due to a fire near the roadway. The Utah Department of Transportation posted on social media the highway was closed on the American Fork side at Canyon Road and on the Provo side five miles north of the U.S. 189 junction.

The fire in Utah County is located in the Timpooneke area and is 3 acres in size, according to Kathy Jo Pollock with Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. She said a nearby campground was evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

In Summit County, the Browns Canyon Fire also sparked Sunday. According to the Summit County Facebook page, the fire burned 10 acres as of Sunday. Resources have stopped progression of the fire. The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
