More than 30 years after the original premiered, Warner Bros. is saying, "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!"
The studio has conjured up a sequel to the 1988 cult classic "Beetlejuice."
The first full-length trailer for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is now online, and Micheal Keaton is back as the irreverent, undead trickster Beetlejuice. Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara have also returned, along with new faces Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux. Tim Burton has also returned to direct the sequel.
Rumors about this follow-up have been circulating for decades, but it took 36 years for them to conjure into an actual movie.
The trailer makes sure to show off the familiar characters, especially Keaton's title character. That's nice to see considering he is, by far, the highlight of the original film and, quite literally, only has 17½ minutes of screen time. There also seems to be plenty of Jenna Ortega, building off her immense popularity following her recent collaboration with Burton, "Wednesday."
The trailer seems fun and projects there will be some laughs, scares and nostalgia in the new flick, but I'm still not convinced this will be a home run.
I will, no doubt, ruffle some feathers here, considering what a cult classic the original has become, but after watching it recently, I realized I don't like the movie that much. As a kid, my brother and I watched it all the time and sang the Harry Belafonte tune, "Banana Boat," ad nauseam. But as an adult, I realized there isn't much of a plot, Keaton is the best thing the movie has to offer, and he's barely on screen.
It could be the filmmakers have cleaned up some of these issues and have a real treat in store for us. For me, however, I have to admit I'm cautiously pessimistic. I know that's not a term, but that's how I'm feeling.
