SPRINGDALE, Washington County — Zion National Park officials confirmed a hiker died inside the park at Scout Lookout on Monday afternoon.

When park rangers received a report of an unresponsive hiker at Scout Lookout, an area along the West Rim Trail where hikers can branch off to Angel's Landing, they responded immediately and performed CPR, a news release says.

Additional rangers hiked with medical equipment to the patient and treated him, according to the release.

"After nearly an hour and a half of administering emergency medical care, medical control gave the order to terminate further efforts," the park's statement says. The person who died was a male of unknown age, officials said.

The West Rim Trail was closed during rescue operations but was later reopened.

Park officials said more than 33 people responded to the incident, and the cause of the hiker's death is still under investigation.
