LAYTON — The Davis County Sheriff's Office said Sunday a 25-year-old man who didn't return from an overnight hiking trip has been found.
Stephanie Dinsmore with the sheriff's office said the man, identified later as Tobias Braaten, is from Washington. He had planned an overnight trip near Thurston Peak in Layton on Friday. Dinsmore said the man did not return when expected on Saturday.
Dinsmore said the trail contained some "adverse conditions." Search and rescue crews began examining the area, but Braaten walked back to the trail around 4 p.m. Sunday.
Dinsmore said Braaten took a wrong turn early on in his hike and ended up three canyons away from the Fernwood Trailhead and spent the night in a cave in Bair Canyon. Braaten was low on some supplies and had a few scrapes to his hand, but Dinsmore said Braaten told them he did not feel like he was lost.
Dinsmore said Braaten had heard the helicopters, but he didn't realize they were searching for him.
"Tobias has been found safe. He has a few scratches and was very hungry and happy to accept a sandwich and a phone to call family, but otherwise in good spirits," Davis County Sheriff's Office said on social media.
