THE SOFTBALL DIAMOND — We already know artificial intelligence is coming for our jobs. Research suggests a quarter of tasks currently done by humans will be done by AI in the future. All told, about 300 million full-time jobs could be lost. Yikes.

But did you also know that technology might also be threatening human dominance in sports?

As you can see, a bunch of people gathered around a ball field just as they have since the 1800s. It should be a time of camaraderie, friendly competition and memorable moments. You know, the type of stuff that humans do best.

But there's a looming threat in the air … a drone is swooping in to take over the game. From the footage, we see the drone expertly catch a fly ball. It's worth noting this catch could never have been made by a human, as it was quite far off the ground.

The video ends after the drone drops down to the ground with the ball. But I've got some pretty good ideas about what transpired after that. Using its advanced intelligence and powerful components, the drone probably pulled off an epic triple play, threw a no-hitter and then kicked a 150-yard field goal.

Of course, there's also a chance the drone was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe it was struck by the ball, rather than catching it. And perhaps it plummeted to the ground after the collision, rather than triumphantly landing on the field to gloat over its human underlings.

Yeah, that's definitely the version I prefer. If a drone can't avoid being hit by a baseball, perhaps other forms of technology aren't quite up to the task of snatching our jobs.
