SALT LAKE CITY — One person was injured and nine puppies died in a basement fire Monday evening in North Salt Lake.

Crews responded at 5:30 p.m. to a two-level duplex that had a fire in the basement. The fire has been extinguished.

One male was inside at the time of the fire and was able to get out. He was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and is now "stable," South Davis Metro Fire Battalion Chief Josh Hardy said. More details about the male's age and condition were not released.

Firefighters found a litter of nine puppies inside and attempted to resuscitate them, but none of them survived. A pet snake was also found inside and is OK, Hardy said.

No information was given about how the fire started.
