WINTER WONDERLAND — We've had some cold days lately. The kind of days when you don't want to venture outside any more than you have to. The kind of days when your car might not start even if it's been parked in the garage. And, the kind of days when you'd better not stick your tongue to a metal pole, or you're definitely going to need emergency care.

Maybe we're going about it all wrong. When temperatures dip like this, rather than feel sorry for ourselves, we could use it as an opportunity for cool experiments. For example, check out this video.

The clever parent who created this video lives in Berthoud, Colorado, which is just north of Denver and is no stranger to cold temps.

"We took full advantage of the canceled school day and the kids and I did a few winter weather experiments, including making frozen soap bubbles," explains the user. "The early morning sunshine, calm air and negative temperatures were perfect for this activity. We made a snow mound next to our back door and used a tripod to hold my phone in front of the snow. We Googled how to make soap bubble solution, put it in a large cup, and used a big straw to blow large bubbles. The kids stayed warm inside and watched the magic from the glass door."

Dang. That's a fascinating experiment. I think I'll definitely try it out next time we dip below zero in my neighborhood.
