ST. GEORGE — A Colorado man was sentenced to 92 months in prison after pleading guilty to trafficking more than 140 pounds of methamphetamine into Utah in March 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Sergio Antonio Silva-Gonzalez, 24, was arrested following a traffic stop on I-15 on March 14, 2022. Officers found 140 pounds of meth and 1 kilo of cocaine in his vehicle.

Silva-Gonzalez gave police a passport issued in Mexico, but is a resident of Denver. According to the prosecutor, he was in the United States illegally at the time of his arrest, and was in possession of a firearm.

"It is mind-blowing to think about the downstream effects of this amount of drugs in the community," U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby is quoted in a press release Friday from the U.S. Attorney's Office of Utah. "Substantial sentences are necessary for people to understand the risks of trafficking drugs."

Following the 92-month sentence, Silva-Gonzalez will spend four years on supervised release.
