ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A puppy was saved on her final day from euthanasia at an animal shelter that says it has too many unwanted pets.
Saturday was a lucky day for Ruby, equal parts bronze lab and pit bull.
Volunteers at the St. George Animal Shelter had Ruby and other dogs outside for visitors, with Christmas music playing on loudspeakers and Santa sitting for photos.
That's when 15-year-old Torrie Reed and her mother took an interest in the puppy's grim fate.
Reed told The Spectrum of St. George that it felt good to rescue Ruby, who had reached the end of her term at the shelter.
