OREM — Utah Valley women's volleyball shut out Abilene Christian in a 3-0 sweep Thursday as part of the university's Barbie night.
Pink filled the Lockhart Arena as the Wolverines took down the Wildcats 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 to claim the weekday win.
The first set was dominated by Utah Valley, who went on a 4-0 scoring run followed by another 5-0 run. The set closed out on an ace by Molly Cummard and a team hitting average of .250.
The second set appeared to be a repeat of the first, with the Wolverines opening on a 5-0 run; however, Abilene Christian fought back and tied it up 6-6 after a service error went in their favor.
Utah Valley took back the lead due to a needed block assist from Avery Shewell and Caleigh Vagana. The momentum carried the Wolverines to a set point at 24-19, but the set didn't end there as the Wildcats answered back with a 4-0 run of their own. At a score of 24-23, Shewell put the second set away for Utah Valley with her fourth kill of the night.
The third set was tied early on at 4-4, but the Wolverines didn't let that last long as they went up on Abilene Christian with a 3-0 scoring run. Wildcats' Ashli Edmiston had three back-to-back kills in an attempt to keep up. Overall, Edmiston led the Wildcats with 11 kills for the night and Madeline Guffy led with 32 assists.
Ultimately, Utah Valley went up 6 points on Abilene Christian, and finished the match with a final kill by Shewell to win 25-20. Tori Ellis had 13 kills for the Wolverines, followed by eight for Shewell.
Utah Valley will continue conference play against Tarleton State in Orem Saturday.
