CEDAR CITY — A man is in custody after troopers spiked the tires of a vehicle during a pursuit near Cedar City, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Just before noon Monday, Utah Highway Patrol troopers were told a stolen vehicle traveling north on I-15 had fled an officer in Washington County. Troopers in Iron County located the vehicle and started following in an unmarked car, but the suspect vehicle started fleeing.
The pursuit continued in the northbound lanes of I-15, and the vehicle was stopped near Cedar City after troopers used spikes to slash its tires, according to UHP Sgt. Cam Roden.
UHP said a "stand-off" occurred at that point. Iron County Metro SWAT responded to the area and police had to remove the "non-compliant" driver from the vehicle.
"Multiple attempts and methods were attempted to get the driver to comply," UHP said. The man was taken into custody, transported to the hospital where he was released a short time later, then booked into jail. His identity has not been released.
Due to the high-risk nature of the stop, both directions of the highway were closed for about two hours, Roden said. All lanes were reopened just after 2:30 p.m.
