WOODS CROSS — Bountiful's early lead was tested, but a long pass at the end gave the Redhawks the 24-17 edge over Woods Cross Thursday night.
The game began with the Redhawks setting the pace, as running back Siaki Fekitoa broke through the Wildcats defense and scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
Woods Cross didn't back down, though. With three minutes to go in the first quarter, the Wildcats found themselves in scoring position on the 3-yard line, but couldn't get the edge as the clock hit zero. Eventually, senior Ben Smith-Mecham kicked a 25-yard field goal through the uprights to narrow the gap to 7-3.
The momentum continued for Woods Cross as Isaac Johnson added to the excitement with an 11-yard rushing touchdown to put the home team ahead. A minute later, the Woods Cross defense came into play as Charlie Howe recovered a fumble by Bountiful, giving Woods Cross the ball back with under five minutes left in the first half.
Woods Cross couldn't capitalize on the fumble, though, and went into the locker room holding on to a narrow lead.
After the break, Bountiful fought its way back in the game after Emerson Gielman connected with Evan Dehart on a 6-yard touchdown pass to give the Redhawks a 14-10 lead. Bountiful extended its lead in the fourth quarter on a successful drive into Woods Cross territory, and was capped off with a field goal from Landon Zayas.
But Woods Cross wasn't done yet.
With less than six minutes left in the game, Charlie Coats marched into the end zone on a 4-yard run to even up the game 17-all.
But it was short lived when Bountiful completed the highlight of the night for the game-winner. Gielman looked downfield and launched a 67-yard pass to Brandon Wilkinson for the final touchdown of the night to give the visiting team a 24-17 win.
