FAIRFIELD, Utah County — Utah County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man Wednesday following an altercation with the man after they responded to a call for help.
Deputies were called to a rural part of Utah County, in Fairfield, at about 11:15 a.m. by a man who claimed he had shot himself in the leg, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies previously said the man was from Salt Lake County, but identified him Thursday as Tyler James McCleve, 33, of Pleasant Grove.
"When deputies arrived, there was an officer-involved shooting," the sheriff's office said in a brief statement. The shooting happened on Wells Canyon Road, near the intersection of Manning Canyon Road.
The sheriff's office later posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying when deputies arrived at the scene, the man pointed a gun at them. Two deputies ordered the man to drop the gun and when he did not comply, they fired their weapons and hit the man, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies administered CPR, but the man died on the scene. His body was taken to the state medical examiner's office.
The Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident.
